Agartala: Mar 26: It is possible to make a whole potato plant with a few millimeter pieces of potato inside a test tube used in the laboratory or a small jar contains hundreds of banana plants. Researchers at the Tissue Culture Lab of the Department of Horticulture and Land Conservation, Government of Tripura, continue to do the impossible.
The Horticulture Research Center is located in the Nagichhara area around Agartala, the capital of the state of Tripura. It is managed by the Department of Horticulture and Land Conservation under the Department of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Government of Tripura.
The research center is a self-contained state-of-the-art tissue culture lab. In this lab, seedlings of parent plants are produced for the production of improved varieties and quality True Potato Seed (TPS). With improved varieties of banana plants and disease free seedlings are produced.
Agriculture Officer Jharna Dutta is in charge of this lab. He said that every work in the lab is done in accordance with certain standards while maintaining quality. So before entering the lab, everyone has to wash their hands and feet thoroughly and enter. In addition, four are produced by placing the potato and banana tissues inside the tubes. These are first thoroughly washed with soap. The next step is to dry the water using a large-sized autoclave machine and a dryer machine. Everything that is done in this lab is done with distilled water. So inside the lab there is a unit for making distilled water. Moreover, there are sophisticated pH meters to measure the acidity of water. The next step is to destroy all kinds of bacteria through ultraviolet light. At the same time, hepa also traps the smallest dust through the filter.
In the next lab a few thousand glass jars and tubes with tissue were placed in temperature controlled light, which are arranged in layers. From these tissues the plant is born in controlled light and weather. Which is subsequently planted in the field or land. Agriculture Officer Jharna Dutt said the garden research center in Nagichara is famous for producing true potato seeds or TPS potato seeds.
The parent plants required to produce these TP potato seeds are produced and cared for through seedling tissue culture. The seedlings are produced in February and maintained in the lab throughout the year. These seedlings are then planted in December to produce seeds. Banana saplings are produced as well.
The demand for sabri banana is very high in the state of Tripura so its seedlings are also produced in this lab. In addition, there is a species of banana called G-Nine which is very popular in various states of India.
The lab produced 22,000 TPS of potato saplings last season and the horticulture department planted and planted the seeds on their own land to produce and sell the seeds. He also said that it is possible to produce up to 5,000 banana saplings a year. Now the question may come to the mind of many, is it possible to produce from potato and banana seedlings?
A plant is born from a potato or a banana tuber in the normal way where it is possible to produce hundreds of seedlings from a potato or banana tuber in the tissue culture method. The seedlings produced in the lab are completely disease free and healthy. So good quality yield is guaranteed from these And it is possible to cultivate potatoes in one hectare of land with 50 grams of TPS donated seeds.
